I have never read any part of the Qoran and therefore cannot comment and I am in effect ignorant beyond what I see before me or discussion I hear/read. I do not propose to search the scripture for any relevant text. There have been people on here who claim to know the Qoran quite well, perhaps not cover-to-cover but hopefully well enough to be able to definitively answer my question.

What exactly does Muslim scripture say that would clearly compel women to wear (or hurriedly don, in a near panic) a covering of the hair (or be convinced by others that they should), and perhaps more than the hair, and then specifically when men are likely to be about (not required where no men are present or expected) ? Is there anything explaining why ? I would be grateful for the full text to be included in any answer plus where it is stated ("chapter and verse" style).

al-Noor 24:31
“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer palms of hands or one eye or dress like veil, gloves, headcover, apron), and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband’s fathers, or their sons, or their husband’s sons, or their brothers or their brother’s sons, or their sister’s sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islam), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of feminine sex. “O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allaah is Ever Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful”

Karl, if you are really interested you will find lots of information on the internet. Many Muslims say there is nothing in the Quran that states women must cover their hair.

I know Muslim women that choose not to wear any form of head covering unless they are going to the mosque. I know a few Muslim women that definitely wear their hijabs as a fashion accessory that draws attention to themselves rather than to protect their modesty.

Sadly I know two Muslim women who wear the burkha but not from choice and I know one who wears one as a political statement.

Just as in any and every religion there are different sects that interpret their holy book differently - not every Muslim has the same beliefs

Thanks Barry, I am aware of the different inclinations, lots not wanting the harder interpretations/dictates. I know one woman who is clearly torn between what her parents have implanted and what hard reality points to. This is a bright person who is now out in the real world away from religious indoctrination and facing a need to reason things out for herself. I have tried to suggest that her religion need not be a burden. She however knows that the people she comes from would insist otherwise.
