House Numbers In Usa

Can someone please explain how house numbers work in USA? On TV programmes nobody ever seems to live at 16 Acacia Avenue or 23 West Street, all the numbers are in the thousands.

As far as i am aware houses are numbered according to the block they are on for example number 1325 would be the 25th house on block 13 etc.

So if it were 123 would it the third house on block 12 or the 23rd house on block one?

If that address related to a largish city built on a grid pattern with blocks, like most US cities are, then it would 1203.

Yes, that's correct.

Obviously, even in the largest US cities, not all address use the block/number format, though - e.g. Macy's in New York is located at 151 West 34th Street New York, NY 10001.

I lived at 80. Branchville Road but it was not the eightieth house on the road!

I grew up at number 1. A small street of what were post new builds...no grid pattern. Our street curved.

Yikes...I just googled and the house next door is on the market. Has the same room configuration which is a surprise.
