Washing Machine Problem
I have some sort of blockage under my kitchen sink which means the water drains away slowly. Stupidly, I used my washing machine and the sink blockage meant that when the machine discharged the water came back into the sink. At the end of the cycle the clothes were still wet with quite a bit of water still in the machine, so I thought I'd do a spin to get rid of it, plugged the machine back in and.......no red light, nothing.
I'm going to try taking out the filter (difficult, as a lot of water will come out and I can't find anything suitable to put underneath), but my question is what could have caused my machine suddenly not to turn on? Can it somehow sense that it hasn't drained properly?

If the blockage clear it's worth taking the gungy pipes into the bathroom and give them a good clean.
When my washing machine seemed dead, not a light on, son-in-law told me to put the entire power off for the house at the consumer unit, leave it for five minutes then put it back on and magically the machine was sorted.

Well I did that - a bit of gunge but nothing that was obvious as a blockage - but now it leaks as I couldn't get them to connect back properly.
So now I have a leak under the sink and a dead washing machine. Scunnered!
Brainiac, get yourself one of these. If sink gets blocked just keep poking it down as far as you can. It will bend round the bend and clear a path through. You can push it down again in a different position if necessary.

Thanks for that, ladybirder. I've left a message for a local plumber who's done work for me before. As I'm going to have to fork out for a new machine I'll need to get all the waste pipes redone properly.
In the description of the unblocker you recommended it says:
"Effectively and quickly solve the stubborn constipation."
Ha ha, yes please!
