Problem with audio CD-R discs

Please can anyone tell me why my Marantz DR6000 Audio CD Recorder (a hifi deck) doesn't recognise JVC's Music Audio CD-R discs? (These discs are clearly not intended for computer use).

I've never had any trouble using TDK's Audio CD-Rs with this excellent 3 year-old recorder.

In the old days, a cassette tape was a cassette tape was a cassette tape. Why isn't one audio CD-R disc identical to another audio CD-R disc?

they pretty much are, and it should work fine.

what software do you use, and did you finalise the disc? and i am assuming that you've told it to make an audio cd, and not a cd with mp3s on it or something?

how many of the JVC discs have you tried?

off the top of my head it could be one of three reasons.

1) although you are using CD-R they aree prob similar to DVD-R's where they have a '+' or '-' value, some computers can only use the '+' ones and some only use the '-' ones. this may be the same with ur hi-fi and the CD-Rs ur using at the moment

2) like mentioned above it may be because you havent selected it to be used as a audio cd

3) some hi-fis and in-car cd stereos only play cds that have all of the same type of music file on it. for example if it were to have ALL mp3's or ALL wma's then it would play but some dont allow a mix and if it has some mp3's and some wma's then it may not play.

hope this is of some help, let me know if u solve the problem

Thanks for your help, fo3nix and MarkyPO5, but I'm afraid we're not there yet.

I'm not talking about using a computer - my iMac G5 in my study works fine - This question is about my hifi setup in my sitting room where one of the separate units is the Marantz CD recorder (a machine with an excellent reputation). It records audio CDs for playback in CD players. No mp3, etc.

Inserting the JVC audio CD-R disc into the CD recorder causes the machine to 'think' for several seconds as it tries to read it (I presume), and to then display 'no disc', indicating that it doesn't recognise the disc as an audio CD-R disc that it can use. I've tried 3 from a pack of 10 discs. So the discs cannot be used.

In the past I've got through many TDK discs without a single problem. I've now got some more of these and they are working normally, too, so I don't think the recorder has developed a fault.

You're right Robert G, the others were on the wrong track for a 'hi-fi' deck. The Marantz got good reviews. I see you posted on the avtalk forum but without much success. I would have suggested a firmware uprade but have searched via the Marantz web site (even under its archived products - no DR6000) and Google. Even tried Traxdata 900 (a badged Marantz). Can't find any firmware upgrades. The JVC discs certainly seem 'faulty' - hope you get some help from JVC. Have you tried here:-

You could be cheeky and contact TDK to see if they have an opinion on JVC's discs!!

Apologies. In which case, I think wideboy's suggestions are spot on.

Many thanks, Wideboy. I'll try those two links.

I'd e-mail Marantz but cannot find an e-mail address for them. I'll think about e-mailing TDK.

Have you tried a regular computer CD-R? I have got a Marantz deck (not sure of the model number) to record onto regular CD-Rs when recording live music. Will check tonight though.
