Don't be put off if you fail first time (or first few times), at least you'll know what you're doing wrong and be able to correct it. If you're failing because you're nervous, buy some Bach's Rescue Remedy from Boots and go to your Dr to ask for something to calm you down, mine prescribed me Beta Blockers!!!
If you have the option I'd veto your test slots also. One of my ex's had their first test at 8:30am in Watford Town Centre - mid rush-hour - she failed pulling out of the test centre onto a (very) busy main road. 2nd time round she got given the same slot, and again failed, this time within five minutes. 3rd time, same slot again and failed yet again because someone drove into the back of her at a set of lights. My advice then was that perhaps she should refuse that slot, and demand a more fair time, such a mid morning when things were a bit quieter.
This is a simple one - on your practical test, look in your rear view mirror and wing mirrors loads! And make sure you move your whole head to look, and not just your eyes! I failed my first test for 'not checking my mirror enough', when really I was, but only by moving my eyes! The examiner won't be looking at you when you drive, so make it as easy as possible to see every single safety precaution you take, even if you feel silly. Trust me, you'll feel sillier waiting for the bus in the rain when all your mates drive past in their cars! Good luck!
