In terms of polystyrene cups and bits of string, how does three way calling work?

I have not heard of three way calling but what I think you mean is this.

Get 2 polystyrene cups and make a hole in the bottom of each just big enough to thread a string through then tie a couple of knots in it to keep it there, about ten feet long string. two people can then talk to each other by one holding the open end of the cup to thier ear and the other one talking into the other cup. The string must be kept tight and not touch anything else the sound will travel through the string.

2 people are having a conversation using polystyrene cups and a piece of string. They realise that they really need to talk to another (third) person about what they are talking about so one of them puts down their cup on the pavement and gets another peice of string out of their pocket and ties it in a knot around the original string (roughly in the middle so that when the third person joins they will both hear them at the same volume). Another polystyrene cup is then attached to the loose end of this new peice of string. One of the original people then goes off to find the new person they need to join the conversation, when they have found them they all pick up a cup each and have a three way conversation.

For future reference if the third person were to stand at one end with one of the original members they would be having a "conference call".

Tie the third line midway between the two others. Providing all line are kept tight it will work ok ... this may however, affect your download speed.

As a side thought. From experience in my youth, it is dangerous to hold onto your cup too tightly when engrossed in conversation with your mate across the street even in a simple two-way conversation.
