i am moving house and there is no chain involved so is 4 -6 weeks for completion about right? - this is a short space of time so when do i contact parties that need to be informed such as utilities, banks , c tax etc is it only when the completion date has been formally confirmed? also am i liable for rent , bills at my old address during the several days it will take to move my furniture and belongings to my new house?

It could be but why do you not have a specific date (subject to searches/surveys) already agreed? You need to be more specific reagarding the property that you are moving to.i.e. is it vacant or new build. MOST IMPORTANT do both you and the vendor have you mortgages in place for your next properties and give your landlord sufficient notice.

Informing utilities can be left until the last couple of days before move. Tee up a provisional removals company soonest. I assume that you have got and arranged things with a competent solicitor. Take my advice and don't try and save money by using an on-line company. Banks and bills etc can be left until you know when you are moving and then get a re-direction of mail with the Royal Mail and then it will all be forwarded to you new address for you to deal with at you leisure(any post office or on-line--about �14 for 3months redelivery). Don't forget to tell your ISP.

The time interval can vary a lot depending on how quick both party's solicitors work, also how quickly local authorities answer questions.

Try to give your phone company around 7 days notice before you move if possible - they'll probably still mess it up anyay, but at least you've done your bit!!
