points on licence

I was reading a website about speed cameras and the site mentioned that points for speeding were considered 'spent' after 3 years. My brother has recently aquired 3 points for doing 45 through the 40 mph zone in the road works on the M1. He says he has a letter stating that they will stay on his licence for 4 years. Is the website wrong, has the law changed recently or has he read the letter incorrectly?

Its 4 years, i got done last november.

Another thing, its down to you to get the points removed from your licence after the 4 years are up, by contacting the people who endorse the licence

Both sources are correct.

As far as the 'totting-up' procedure is concerned, points become 'spent' after 3 years So, for example, if someone has points on their licence from July 2003, those points won't be counted, for totting-up purposes, if the person is convicted of a driving offence this month.

However, you can't get a replacement licence, with the points removed, until 4 years after the date on which the points were added to the licence.

Thanks Buenchico, I have been trying to find that answer for ages...my wife received an SP30 with 3 penalty points and for the last 3 years have been able to tease her about it but looks like its going to come to an end soon!!
