where do pigments that make up all manufactured colours come from? are they manufactured or are they grown/mined etc?

Before the Industrial Revolution we had to rely on natural pigments/dyes extracted from rocks, plants and animals. However, most modern pigments/dyes are synthetic and are the product of extensive research by chemists. Post again if you are looking for something more specific and I will try to help.
