Lakeland egg timer

Last year whilst in England I bought a Lakeland egg timer, but because of the suitcase space I left the wrapper and instructions behind. Anyone know how it works? It's the red half egg shape with markings for soft, medium and hard. It boils with the egg and when it goes black to one of these markings it is ready. My problem is when do I put the timer in the water, when it is boiling, or before. thanks for any help.

You mean this one? Suck it and see.
But for consistent results, the eggs would normally be lowered into boiling water. (If you put them in cold water, and the water takes ages to come to the boil, the eggs could be almost done before the water even boils. Another three minutes, and they're way overdone).

To stop eggs cracking when you put them in, add a tablespoon or so of salt to the water,

Thank you - yes that's the little blighter, so I put eggs and timer in when water is boiling? I thought so but wasn't sure.

Have just had a reply from Lakeland - they say that eggs (and timer) should be put into COLD water and brought to the boil - just a piece of info for you all. Many thanks to you both. x
