i'm about to make some chutney and had great difficulty finding suitable jars. Asda were selling mint sauce for 3p each so i bought 15 and washed them out.
I've washed them in the dishwasher and boiled them but I can still smell the mint - especially on the lids.
Is there anything I can do to get rid of the smell?
thanks x

cheers, do you mean, just soak in it for a while?x
Have you tried putting hot salty water in them ? this might well take the smell away, well worth trying, good luck, Ray
Bicarbonate of soda is used to clean fridges and get rid of smells.
just use it to clean wipe it over or could soak usually works on everything
Wow crisgal, brilliant idea to buy the mint sauce jars, would never have thought of that and jars are so expensive to buy! Maybe we should have a 'top tips' section! Will look out for such a bargain in the future.

I tried a similar thing years ago when I bought pickled onions that were on offer purely for the jars they were in. Putting the lids in (acidic) vinegar solution might end up making the metallic lids react funnily though. I soaked them for a couple of hours in soapy water.

Alternatively, you could just make interesting mint-flavoured chutneys. I'm not convinced that the amount of actual mint-smelling chemicals left on the lids would be detectable in the chutney anyway.
lemon juice
