...to post this but probably the most appropriate. Many years ago, Tomorrow's World (BBC TV) featured a new process which was said to make it possible for anyone to chrome or gold plate things using a kit (chrome, gold, silver, etc.) which in essence was a gel that you applied to the surface to be given the shine. Does anyone know what became of that idea ? If it is still around and kits are available then I would like to source one.

Heathfield, At first glance all I get are references to electroplating - this is not what I saw on TV - see below. Whickerman, no, that is exactly the point, what was demonstrated was swabbed onto the surface (any non-absorbent material, as I remember it). Electroplating is the standard (including industrial) method and not the least bit exceptional or difficult to understand - you just need the bath and electodes, etc. but not something you contemplate as a one-off or just out of curiosity.
