Packard Bell Scanner

Hi AB'ers, I have a packard bell diamond plus scanner. I have installed the drivers a few times but cannot get the scanner buttons to do anything. I can control it on the computer screen but not from the unit itself. In the troubleshooting guide it suggests I enable Direct Scan by going to start>programs>select scanner>apply Direct Scan. However there is no option to do so! Also there is no scanner icon present in the taskbar as it suggests. My system is XP. Anyone else have this problem and resolved it?....Thanks
