ipod on strike

Have a 20GB iPod which will not budge when earphone is plugged in. Yet it plays music perfectly when t is docked in Bose...and also plays music through earphone WHEN it is plugged into a socket and charging. But even after an eight hour charging session, it then does not appear to have charged at all.

Need this iPod to start performing as my 80GB was stolen in a 45 second 'dip' (no longer) in Dublin city last week. It has felt like an amputation.

Any advice appreciated. On issues like this you realise that Apple talks every bit as much waffle as its competitors on support sites.
