Distance doesn't have much to do with speed - it could arrive tomorrow morning or it could arrive Friday or even next week
1st class is no better than 2nd for delivery
Neither is guaranteed
If it's important send recorded or special
As an example I posted 3 parcels last week (on the 12th), all recorded, one 1st class which arrived the next day, one 2nd class which also arrived the next day and the other also 2nd class still hasn't arrived yet

My experience of Royal Mail Recorded signed for next day delivery service, mainland Britain. It will cost you nearly six pound, it will be delivered sixteen month later, to the wrong address and not signed for. Then they will refuse to compensate you the price (6) you originally paid for the service, but they do send you two books of stamps... whoopeee. even the ombusman couldnt get them to pay up. Royal Mail have a target of delivering 93% of 1st Class mail on the day following posting (excluding Sundays). During the last reported quarter (April, May & June 2007), which is independently monitored, they met this target:

Wickford is conveniently situated for delivery via the principal regional sorting office, at Chelmsford. So there's quite a good chance that your letter will be delivered tomorrow morning. If not, it will almost certainly be delivered on Thursday.
