That's a little before even my time, but my money is on seed. Giant ferns existed before trees, and they grow from seeds.
The seed - sort of. I think the seed is what actually generated the first tree. The seed is what evolved into being able to sprout a tree. All of these nutrients and mineral from the ground somehow collected with each other and had the formula to produce a tree. These elements were probably "looking" for one another in the planet's early development days with intention of synthesizing the suns energy to benefit micro-organisms on ground.
