does anyone know what the word/abbreviation 'ply' means or stands for on a box of tissues?

i dont know the literal translation but id guess it has the same meaning as in plywood ie more than 1 sheet making a whole
Or knitting wool - 3 ply, etc. The ply make up the thickness.
Ply: A measure of the number of individual yarns twisted together to produce the finished carpet yarn. For example, a two-ply yarn means that each tuft consists of two yarns twisted together. For cut-pile carpets plied yarns must be heatset to prevent untwisting under foot traffic.

Basically ply just means layer / thickness.
