No audio device
Please can someone help? I`ve googled and tried everything I could find, been at it for days now.
When I click on audio device in control panel everything is blanked out and it says `no audio device`
In device manager when I click audio codecs or legacy audio drivers, it says this device is working properly.
There is a yellow exclamation mark on PCI device, when I click this it says ` the drivers for this device are not installed` All was ok until I formatted the drive and installled xp. Then I used the original utilities disc to reinstall the drivers.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Then restart the machine.
Probably Windows mis-detected it after the clean install. You may well find that as you have now installed the correct drivers, when you restart, Windows will correctly identify it and use those drivers.

instead of the original (which is absolutely what you should have done) how about downloading new up-to-date-drivers
while you are at it?
from scratch
install in this order
chipset
video
sound
rest
(might as well include the bios!)
assuming you did
do the rojash thing uninstall - immediately reboot - refuse install ... then use the new drivers.
don't forget ... the coundcard will have 5 or more functions ..... so uninstall the lot before
