My camera can take movie clips (in AVI format? I think!) I can transfer them straight from the SD card to my PC and play them using "Quick time" or "Real player" etc, this is great, however when I save them onto disks (CD-R or CD-RW) my DVD player does not seem to recognise them and cannot play them? What am I doing wrong?

They have to be on DVD-R or DVD-RW
A lot of home DVD players won't play avi files, you either need to get some software that will record avi to DVD such as Roxio or Nero but these aren't cheap (and take quite a lot of computing power). The other option is to get a DVD player that will play such things, I got one from eBuyer for such a purpose last year, cost me 30, bound to be cheaper now, just look for anything that says plays AVI, MP4 or DIVX and you should be ok
I think you should convert your AVI Videos from your camera to DVD firstly, and then you can watch them on your DVD Player.
Maybe this software can help you :Mac DVD Burner
