Manchester 1851 census

Can someone help me this is driving me CRAZY

1790 - 1810 The area from Portland St down to Medlock was developed.

From Granby Row, now part of UMIST site
it went Acton Street
Pump Street - parallet to Granby - although Back Acton St is at right angles to this lay out - and can still be seen (gulp)

These two have now disappeared below Whitworth Street and the old fire station and coroners court

IN the 1841 census, these streets along with Bloom, Canal Chorlton are in the London Road section of Manchester

and in 1871, 1881 census come in the Market Street section

and I cannot find them anywhere in the 1851 census, and that is the whole area, Granby, Pump, Cobourg, Acton, Aytoun, Minshull, Sackville, Chorlton


I have tried, Ardwick, Chorton o Medlock, Deansgate, Market Greengate St George Ancoats - and cannotfind anyof them anywhere.

The obvious one London Road in 1851 only does London, Fairfield, Travis up to Gt Ancoats

This is driving me CRAZY !

Oh,and while you are at it, does anyone have a location of a court or alley or passage which I can go and have a look at - and then read the census ! gasp. I thought around Stevenson Sq would be good. [I know this shows I am terminally sad and should be on tablets]

HO107 2228 vol 53 London road was apparently unfilmed according to my Index to Townships in tthe 1851 census Surname Index of lancashire bu John Coupe ofr ther manchester and lancashire FHS. (though the booklet was pub 1993)
2228 vol 3, also London road was filmed.
Maybe this is the problem?

there were some films that were flood damaged and were never filmed originally and so they do not appear in the transcripts as they were not available to transcribe of course, however, the Manchester & Lancashire family history society carried out a restoration project and susequent transcription project and they have them now on CD, but you can only get it from the society:
These show, where legible on the originals, the full census transcription which has been retrieved from the water damaged originals. Note some of these are superseded by CD versions containing additional data.

Soz i don;t mean there were some films that were flood damaged, i mean there were some enumerators returns that were flood damaged and were deemed unfit to handled to be filmed when the 1851 was eventually committed to celuloid.

Banned dot is my favourite !

I finally found copies of the books she named
the FHS publications
and they were quite useful.

In fact they listed an Angus (v rare name in Manchester) exactly where I thought he should be.
Angus family in Elliott street, william, Bridget David and Annie in 1851. This has taken me years to locate, but thanks Dot
