fitting two batterys in to a car

how do i go about fitting two batterys into my car. because of all the "boy toys" i have in my car, i find my battery doesn't perform as well as it used to. a friend told me to fit two batterys with a relay on them, so that when one is charged, the relay will switch to charge the other. is this possible & if so, how?

i know you are!! they use this idea in motorhomes also.

You could try a heavy duty one.

I'd buy a bigger (electrical capacity, not size) / better car battery, as messing around with electrics yourself'll put your insurance up. I expect it could be done, though.

Some sort of relay arrangement might not be a good idea. With all the inductive loads in a car there will be a lot of electrical noise when the relay switches over which will probably annoy various bits of electronics on your car. Also there will be a minute pause in which the car has no electrical power, which might reset the code on the radio, annoy the computer, etc (though the various power supply filters will probably save the day). You should be able to connect two batteries in parallel (negative to negative, positive to positive). This will double the capacity. Or, as suggested above, get a bigger battery. You should, however, also bear in mind that I'm an electronics student not a car mechanic ;-)
