How to work out Square yardage?

I have some Stone flags which i have measured in Inches. I have been asked to provide the square yardage but don't know how? Anyone help?

36" x 36" = one square yard.

72" x 36" = 2 square yards,

72" x 72" = 4 square yards.

Type up the inches here and I'll try help. Going to bed soon mind!

Are you sure these measurements are in inches?

The dimensions you have provided are of areas, the smallest of which is about 37 feet (11 metres) square, and the largest of which is about 47 feet (14m) by 62 feet (18.8m). They are quite large areas.

If your measurements are in inches then your first measurement is 425 x 510 inches. This equals 216,750 square inches. This is 1,505.2 square feet (divide sq. inches by 144) and 167.2 sq yards (divide sq feet by 9). This equals 140.7 sq metres (multiply sq yards by 0.84125).

The figures for the other measurements are:

450 x 535 = 240,750 sq. ins; 1,671.9 sq. feet; 185.8 sq. yards; 156.3 sq metres.

565 x 745 = 420,925 sq. ins; 2,923.1 sq. feet; 324.8 sq yards; 273.2 sq. metres.

515 x 560 = 288,400 sq. ins; 2,002.8 sq. feet; 222.5 sq. yards; 187.2 sq metres.

465 x 440 = 204,600 sq, ins; 1,420.8 sq. feet; 157.9 sq. yards; 132.8 sq metres.

To be certain, maybe you could post the dimensions of a single flag, and how many flags you have.

I'm obvioulsy going wrong somewhere , but i'm ******** if I know where!! I have measured each stone and written them down in a list, the first stone is 30 inch by 35 inch. the second is 26inch by 39 inch, the third is 26 inch 36 inch. I added all these figures together. That is probably where i'v gone wrong!! Obviously i have a lot more stones than this and the list is a long one. I segmented them and just added the measurements together in my earlier list of measurements.

What you need to do is add all the measurements of the stones that run in one direction (30" + 26" + 26" +..... etc) and then add all the measurements of the stones that run at 90 degrees (ie a right angle) to the first measured line (35" + 39" + 35" + etc)... This will give you two totals which you THEN multiply together to get in SQUARE inches. Divide this figure by 1296 (which is the area occupied by one square yard, ie 36" x 36") to give you the square yardage.

From the info you've given in your second post, I think you need to do this calculation:-

(425+450+565+515+465) x (510+535+745+560+ 440)

(2420 x 2790) = 6751800 sq in = 5210 sq yards (approx)

5210 sq yards is just under 1.1 acres, is the area you want to lay paving stones on really this big??

that works out to about 2/3 of an average football pitch

Let's start by getting a rough answer and seeing if it seems right. On average each stone is about 28 inches x 37 inches which is 0.8 square yards.
Multiply that by number of flags to give good estimate of total area.
How may flags have you got.
