If the latter, although a good installation will work, the payback period is longer than the probable life of the units, you will not save money. The power producing panels are also relatively dear to buy and install and there is additional maintenance in terms of the battery storage set up.
Supplying the grid isn't a way to make money in most places. However in some countries the feed in tarrif for solar is high enough to make it just about worth doing financially.
You really need to be doing it because you love the planet and want your kids to have a future.
Grid feed power is great in hot countries where the peak load is airconditioning. The match between the solar and air conditioning load is very good. There are massive benefits to the grid infrastructure because the high loads don't have to be carried by coal fired plants hundreds of miles away. Unfortunately most power companies are too dull to understand and don't encourage consumers to embrace this technology.
