Help with Internet connection.

My Sister has a Toshiba laptop and uses AOL to connect to the internet. Recently AOL started to download `automatic updates` which resulted in her not being able to connect to AOL through her usual Virgin `phone line (Dial-up).
Despite taking the machine to a large retailer for the `Techguys` to check her modem they returned it saying all was fine. The response of the computer is`you are not able to connect to this service on this line`. Despite having done so for three years, since the `updates` nothing works. Have tried Restore, checking internet connections, has anyone any idea what might be wrong?
The `techguys` by the way used it to connect to their own BT line, not Virgin, would this make any difference?
