Western Union via Paypal
7 Answers
Hi everyone, I have to make a payment to someone who's requested I use Western Union. However the fact that WU has no protection makes me uneasy, and I've been told that I can route WU through PayPal so I'd then have some protection if for any reason something went wrong. Has anyone else heard this, or have any idea how I'd do it? Thanks all

If it is one of these scenarios whereby you send them money via Western Union and they will send you a money order for more than the value of what the payment is in return for 'helping out' in some way then definitely DONT as this will be a scam. The money orders they send look very real and the banks accept them as legitimate and will even give you cash. However, three or four weeks down the line the money order is found to be a fake, the bank wants their money back and the funds you sent via Western Union are long gone. I would always want to ask more questions of anyone wanting payment that way as it is used very frequently by scammers.
Why would they want you to pay by WU? It is very costly for you and PayPal fees are very reasonable. They don't even need a PayPal account.
Be warned that if you do manage to use PayPal to pay WU you will have no PayPal protection at all. Simply by transferring the funds from PayPal to WU means they have provided the service you have contracted them to do.
There would be no relationship between PayPal and the person who eventually receives the money, so PayPal would not be able to recover your money.

Have you been asked this through an email or is it Ebay related? If its been asked through email and something about a doctor who has passed away and wants to leave you cash, then thats a scam, the Nigerian type, dam ******* as if anyone is going to fall for it anyway?! As if it is for ebay, i can remember reading that everyone who uses it must use Paypal, i would avoid the item if you have to pay by Western Union and report the seller.
I have sent money to people via PayPal and as far as I remember the receiver of the money pays, not the sender. Maybe this is why they don't want to use Paypal although I cannot say what the charges are for Western Union and who pays them. It may be that you pay the charges for Western Union hence their request. I'd be pretty careful if I was you, once you have sent the money order that's it, if no goods appear - tough.
