working out a gas bill
4 Answers
My son has just moved into a flat that only has gas central heating. Wanted to know how much the gas was costing over a week. Rang gas board who suggested waiting until first bill of 8 weeks came in !! finally got to speak to someone who said they would work out formula and phone me. Is this just Isle of man ( We have 3 different sorts of gas here) or is it this hard other places. I found old gas bills of my dad's and think son has used about 22 in a week for about 2 hour a day heat. so over the 8 weeks he could easily have a bill of 200 inc standing charge. Glad he didn't whop the heating on and wait for first bill !

You can download this.
Depending where (which town) you are on the island depends which sort of gas you get - this is explained at the top - A, B and C.
Then for each of them there are 3 tariffs depending what you use the gas for. Presumably this means (and I've never been to the IoM) that you all have a meters which 3 dials on them that feed 3 sets of pipes? - otherwise I haven't the foggiest how IoMG measure this.
Take the dial readings now, take them again again each day and get your 4 digit calculator to work out how much to pay.
The standing charge is about 18 per quarter in total to add to the above All the tariffs include the 5% VAT

Had a very nice phone call from manx gas who explained that I was not the only one confused by new meters that rush round at high speed. Old gas bill of my dads was old imperial system . New sysem works out at 34p a cubic metre so gas bill should be in region of 8 weeks at 5 plus 56 days standing charge @14p 8 plus 5% vat less 2 1/2 % reduction in vat. so basically 52 for a shower a day and very little CH. Thats ok then . Thank you for your imput. He might even have a bit more heat when its really cold.
