Astronomy clubs exits in most areas. I would be surprised if a quick google in your ares didn't show up some amateur clubs. They are by far the best place to start to gain some knowledge.
Why not try your local astronomical society ? They usually welcome new members and offer a lot of help and advice. This link is on the IYA2009 site and has links to the Federation of Astronomical societies (which is where you can find your nearest local society), the Society for Popular Astronomy and the British Astronomical Association.
I've got a full set of Voyage through the Universe, by Time-Life, about 20 volumes, lavishly illustrated on high-quality paper. You are most welcome to it, absolutely free, if you can collect (South London)
