excel question

Is there a way that I can put a tick into a character string in excel?  This appears to be one mathematical sign that I can't use. I know it is available in word and I even tried to cut/paste to no effct.

Open Word, and copy or cut a tick as you have been doing. Make sure the tick is created from a standard font, such as Arial or Times New Roman. Then go to Excel, and go Tools > AutoCorrect. Decide on something to type to create a tick, either a character combination (such as (v)) or a word you're not going to use (such as addatick), type this in the Replace: box, and paste your tick into the With: box. Click OK, and whenever you type whatever you decided on in an Excel spreadsheet it should AutoCorrect it to a tick.

tried all that, but find that autocorrect will not let me paste the tick from word. I'm using windows 2000 professional. excel/word 2000

The only tick I can see in the symbol box is the Sqaure Root sign, which is an IBM extended Ascii character, as opposed to the Microsoft extended Ascii excel uses which offers different characters (Scroll down to "IBM PC Extended ASCII Display Characters" on this page for comparison) .

However, copying and pasting this works in my Word & Excel 2000. (See here for my attempt, maybe you can use this) It may appear as � depending on the character set you are using.

Otherwise, why not find a small gif image of a tick and insert this into your excel document when needed?

Thanks for the help. I think I see now where I went wrong.
