Looking at that I tend to agree with you. It only uses 5v DC which is the power output of USB so in theory it should run off the computers USB output.
Are you plugging it directly into the USB port or are you using a hub which most high powered peripherals have problems with.
Secondly, are you using the laptop with a mains supply or just from its battery as this might affect it power-wise
Finally make sure that you have installed the drivers off the disk, not just the scanning software.
Having said all that, are you absolutely sure that the scanner is in a working condition.

I just googled the name and model and came across it by clicking on a couple of things on the list.
There must be somewhere on the scanner to plug mains in, according to this copied from the manual.
Hardware Installation
Please complete the hardware installation before installing the drivers.
1 With the power to your PC on, connect the scanner's USB cable to the USB port of your PC.
2 Connect the power adapter to the scanner and plug it into an appropriate power outlet.

Just found these 2 reviews, you don`t need a power lead.
I would try installing again, did you have scanner plugged in and turned on when you put the disc in.
1. Good quality for the Price
Review of Packard Bell Diamond 1200 Plus by ruthpern
Advantages: Powered from the USB cable
Disadvantages: Fax option, but no sheet feeder.
I got it home and opened the box.
What was in the box?
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The scanner, instruction manual and CDs.
The CDs had software and drivers on them and the manual was, well, a manual.
How easy was it to install?

2. The CD autoran and asked me a few questions about licences and where I wanted to put the software and that was that.
The scanner itself is USB plug and play and is even powered from the USB port so no need to find an extra plug socket.
I didn't need to use the manual.

hi i plugged the usb cable straight into the usb port and had it on mains so plenty of power. i only have one disc with it and that downloaded about 3 different things off it including adobe player ? did say about putting photo print cd in but have nt got that though could see if they had one with the scanner so would that make a difference or is it not essential ? find it confusing with the discs as not sure if everything has to be downloaded or if some are extras.
If I remember correctly
In xp it`s - My computer - view system information - hardware - device manager .
You should see something like printers scanners imaging devices.
Double click on your scanner if you can see it listed, and this should tell you if the device is working properly.
If not, try downloading the driver from here.

Double click on this bit on the page PBscan1200plus.exe, and follow the instructions.

Trish, the two sets of information you have provided seem to give conflicting advice as to the order in which to install the scanner.
Normally with a scanner, the drivers are installed first and then the scanner should be connected to the computer after it has re-booted. Is that how you did it Leo?
I think I would try re-installing it.
To do that you must first unplug the scanner and delete it from the hardware in device manager.
When you install the drivers, I would use the ones available for download from the second link that Trish gave you

if it was installed in the wrong order then just removing it from device manager rarely works. it only uninstalls the hardware, not the incorrectly installed driver.
unplug the scanner, click start and control panel, then add remove programs and uninstall all the scanner software, restart your computer and then start the installation again and do not plug in the scanner until told to do so.

after downloading it from the link on here it says welcome to diamond 1200 set up and scanner driver set up wizard and to click next which i do then after downloading quickly it says finished downloading diamond 1200 /scanner/driver files to your computer. click finish to exit set up. then an icon on desktop does exactly the same thing nothing more. looked in documents and nothing. dont understand why i cant get any further.
