Unable to find Scanner

Recently my computer crashed and had to have everything (even Windows) reinstalled. Now I�m trying to reinstall my scanner - exactly as i did before - but for some reason it�s not happening. I�ve managed to install the software, but it keeps saying that it�s 'unable to find the scanner'. The scanner is on and I�ve checked the USB connection both in the scanner and back of the computer thousands of times and i�t all seems ok. Could there be another reason? (thanks for all your help in advance!)

When you first plug the USB scanner in, does Windows come up with a "found new hardware" notifcation?

Try unplugging the scanner from the computer.
Then load the software.
Then, lastly, plug the scanner into the computer after the software has fully loaded.
