Problems with web browser

I'm an AOL user, and was trying to update my virus software (AVG) and it keeps giving me an error message about being unable to connect with the server. I went into Internet Explorer and I'm getting exactly the same error message. The AOL bowser works just fine and I've been into the diagnostic progammes and it's saying there's no problem with my connection, so why can't I get anything apart from AOL to work ? It was fine up until recently. Any ideas ?
