It's an excellent antibacterial agent.

Alcohol will kill pretty much most bugs
It also evaporates quickly, leaving that tingly feeling we associate with freshness. The rapid evaporation allows the antibacterial ingredients found within the mouthwash to be deposited on the teeth and gums, not washed away down the throat.
