I have a Worcester Bosch 28CDi Combi Boiler with A British Gas Remote Thermostat.
As with a lot of products, the owners manual leaves a lot to be desired.
What is the purpose of the "Advance" button on the command receiver on the boiler?
The manual only states when you can use the advance button, not its function/purpose
When you press 'Advance' the boiler function moves to the next 'state'. If it's set to turn off at 10:30 say and you do not want it on any longer for that part of the day, pressing advance will turn it off sooner than the programmed setting. Conversely if you get home early at 16:30 and it's not set to come on until 17:30 pressing advance will turn it on early. This...
Can you please tell me which manual are you referring to and what page. An initial guess would be that you can advance the timing through 'programmed, continuous from first 'on' to last 'off', 24 hour and Off' settings, I could be wrong though.

Conversely if you get home early at 16:30 and it's not set to come on until 17:30 pressing advance will turn it on early. This means you do not have to alter the baisc programme settings, they will stay the same.
