Some laptops have a physical switch (my Fujitsu has a switch on the front of the computer), some latops you have to press the "Fn" key and one of the "F" keys at the top. There should be a picture of a Satelite Dish in Blue on the correct F key. Some computers you have to turn it on with the software.

First check as prev. person stated that your "wireless" has not been turned off on your laptop. Mine is a slide switch at front of laptop which slides to the right. Once this has been checked. Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) Virgin etc.. will have an icon (picture) displayed on the bottom right hand side of your screen. If you click on this it should start to give you ways to check you are connected.... start there first and shout if you get stuck ...
Adding to what "ihaveaquestion" said, you should have an icon for your wireless connection in the bottom right corner to the left of the date. It's usually a picture of a PC. Right click on this icon and see you have an option to enable it as it may be disabled. If it says enable then select this option.
Failing that, you may have another icon which will tell you what wireless networks are available, ie. wireless routers you PC can detect. If you have click on it and a box should appear listing networks available in your area. You may get a few neighbours show up as well your own. If your own router is listed simply select this one to connect to. It will probably ask you to enter your security wireless Key which you should have written down somewhere. Enter the key and it should work.

"place the end of a paper clip into somewhere" - Sounds like someone has been resetting the router which could explain why you can't connect to it.
If the wireless wasn't turned on (from the laptop) then windows (assuming you are using windows) would actually tell you that it wasn't turned on - I think, without going to get my laptop and finding the exact phrase - 'no wireless device detected' is what is displayed.
If the wireless wasn't turned on (from the router) then windows (again, assuming you are using windows) would tell you 'no wireless network detected'.
Maybe if you could click the wireless network icon in the bottom right corner and let us know a little more.
