FREEZER IN GARAGE

yes.....and cheaper to run in an unheated place.

Be careful ..... many modern freezers require a MINIMUM ambient temperature to work efficiently, or at all. Best to find out from the manufacturer of the freezer if this applies to your model. I seem to recall this coming up on a consumer programme a few years back, since when manufacturers have stated a minimum ambient temperature in their installation booklets.

We can beat you on that Rev Sermon. We moved in 1990, no room for freezer so shoved it in the garage, moved again in 2008 and it has been in an outside shed and has worked perfectly in both locations, so that makes 20 years.

Mine didn't work that well and the guy who came to fix said they shouldnt be in the garage.

I agree with regulo's posting. Domestic equipment is designed to be used inside houses and there will be a minimum temperature below which they will not work. The manufacturer should know this and I would expect it to be in the manual.

Well I have learnt something. Weird the things one comes across. Sounds suspiciously to me as if the manufacturer has deliberately built in a flaw, although for the life of me I can't see what they'd gain from it. Probably some electronic equipment that stops working if it detects the wrong sort of snow. Today's designers/manufacturers eh ? Tsk... Wasn't like it in the good old days.

Old Geezer, you're right, what was wrong with the cold pantries houses used to have. Ours was called "the living room"!

I think the problem of minimum ambient temperatures has only come about since the introduction of newer, ozone friendly, refrigerant gases, possibly not as efficient as the old gases. I stand to be corrected, if we have any refrigeration engineers out there?

A freezer would be OK in a garage but not necessarily a fridge/freezer. Some of the cheaper fridge/freezers only have one thermostat which is used to keep the fridge at the required temperature. It also keeps the freezer at the correct temperature automatically. However, if in the garage during cold weather conditions, the fridge remains cold without the fridge/freezer compressor running. This reults in your freezer thawing out.

The better fridge/freezers have a thermostat for both fridge and freezer and would be OK in a garage.

why do some people on this site answer questions when they obviously don't know the answer (except regulo, scotman). the appliance will work ok but once the temp in the garage drops below the minimum operating ambient temp, it will begin to defrost. We have been called out to a load of these situations which results in the customer being charged for the call out as the manufacturer will not cover the call out chg for this under the warranty
