Samsung network change

My son had a mini disaster with his old Nokia (Orange) fone when the screen cracked at the park. My wife said he could inherit her old fone whilst he waits for my iphone as I am getting a new one later this month. Is there an easy n **free** way I can make the fone, a Samsung G600, recognise his Orange SIM or is it just easier to use the Vodafone SIM in the fone and let those who need know this number? Thk u
