This is an honour bestowed upon a citizen of the UK by the queen (normally selected by the government) for sevices to the county/charity/sport/business etc. A Lord is someone either selected to serve in the Upper House of government, usually for outstending political service but sometimes for other reasons similar to how Knights are selected, or until recently born into a family that has a hereditary title.
