Hi,

The central heating in our house was working fine yesterday but we've woken up this morning to cold radiators.

The Baxi combi heater seems to be working fine and we have hot water but there's no heat coming through any of the heaters.

We are unsure as to whether the thermostat is working or not.

Has anyone got any ideas?

I suggest that you check the following:

1)  Turn the thermostat dial up and down. You should hear a faint click when you reach the temperature of the room.  At settings below this the heating won't come on.  At higher settings it should fire up.

2)  Check the programme setting.  It could be that it has accidentally got set to "Off" or "Twice daily" when it should be on "Continuous" or "All day".

3)  It is also possible that you accidentally "advanced" the programme timer so that an "On" period has become an "Off" period.

it could be your diverter valve or a perished rubber seal i think called a diaphragm -which costs about 5.this was the case with me

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.

I think we've discovered that its the motorised valve. Its a grey box on the side of the immersion heater.

Does anyone know if this is a big job to mend?

One for the professionals?

If you are right, and it is the motorised valve, then you can do what we did when ours failed about four years ago. First we had it replaced by a plumber, then the new one lasterd under a year! So rather than pay another 100 for yet another one, we just removed the box from the valve, (two screws), and leave it hanging from its wires against the airing cupboard wall. Then we twist the walve by hand twice a year, to turn the radiators on and off in summer and autumn. The valve turns really easily and its never caused a problem since.
