I currently am on a provisional license, but have my own car. It's insured under my dad's girlfriend's name (as it stays at her house), and has me as a named driver. We are with Norwich Union I think. Do I have to stay with them for a whole year before I can change (with dad's girlfriend still as main driver), or can I have independent insurance with a different company after I've passed my test? Also, what difference does having a tracking device/immoboliser make to you insurance? Is it a big difference? Thanks x

You can cancel your insurance whenever you like.  You will get back the relevent proportion less admin costs.

Immobolisers bring down your insurance premium, don't know too much about trackers but assume that they will too.  Trouble is that trackers are v expensive to fit and you have to pay for the 'system' rental.  So it may not be cost effective to fit one.

While the car is insured under an other's name you're not earning no claim bonus, pass your test, take your pass plus course and get 1st yrs no claim bonus immediately.

Hi Bexxybex,  I work in car insurance and I agree with Tim, you can cancel that policy whenever you want you will probably have a cancellation fee. The sooner you start your own policy in your name the better. Who is named as the cars owner and keeper on the insurance documents and the registration documents? If they match then fine but if the registration documents are in your name and an incident was to happen it could stop the insurance company from paying out.
