Tell him not to drive the car in any circumstances until he has reinsured it. As dzug has mentioned, there may be a possibility of getting a refund on the existing insurance premium, but this will probably take a while to come through and the insurance company may make an administration charge which swallows up part of the refund.
Wish people would not comment on things that they do not know about. Under the Road Traffic Act, your son will still be insured by the policy despite the unfortunate death of your hysband - this is only a temporary measure, and should be addressed as soon as possible by changing the name of the policy holder. It is an offence not to inform the DVLA of a change of the registered keeper. This must be the usual driver of the vehicle.
