My daughter pays monthly for her car insurance, she has now changed her car ,the company who she is with cannot match other quotes so she has decided to change insures, they have told her that unless she pays up for the whole of the policy that they will not release her 6 years no claims bonus can they do this ?

If it's anything like a phone contract she will be tied and may have to pay the remaining months on said contract. Even if they don't 'release' her 6 years, they can't touch/affect the previous 5, which when it comes to price will produce pretty similar.

Many insurers will let you pay for a YEARLY policy over a period of time. It is not a monthly contract - it is an annual one paid monthly. Not paying can put you in breach of contract - and can even affect your credit rating.
there is no way out,her best bet is stay with them for the last 6 months,then change.
