Depends on a few things, how bad was your write off? There are different classes and if it's a lesser one you could carry on driving it. Only trouble then is when you come to sell it it is logged as a write off and therefore worth considerably less even with work done to fix it. You will get a cheque for the write off value from your insurers and presumably they will pay the third party (was it your fault or knock for knock?) either way the costs will be settled and depending on what category write off you should be able to keep the car and do what you wish with it.
A transit once reversed into my old banger whilst parked and left a 2 inch deep dent in a panel. Because it was a large panel and expensive to replace and the car was old they wrote it off and sent me a nice cheque! I just carried on driving it as it was perfectly safe and it lasted a good few years after that.
