My car insurance is due for renewal soon but I have decided that I can probably do without a car and rely on public transport. My car is on its last legs anyway and is probably only good for scrap. If I wanted to own a car again in the future will my (full) no claims bonus be valid indefinitely ? If not, is there a (low cost) method of keeping it?

It is valid for two years. I don't know of any way of retaining it without buying car insurance after two years.
Some insurance companies will accept it over two years old, but they are few and far between - as Ethel says, two years is the general rule.
