Insurance Number
I am having a nightmare of a problem I am due to work on the election count, I am retired but have been a housewife since 1976 having worked on previous counts I now have to prove that I am legally able to work in this country where I was born . I don't have a passport and can't find my National Insurance I receive a state pension My name on my marriiage certificate is different from my birth certificate as I was married before. I think my mother now deceased destroyed all documents relating to my divorce 40yrs ago. The stupid woman at the council says she will be finded 10,000 if she has not done all the checks and I query this I think they could be finded if I am working illegally. I am going to try in the morning to see if I can get a replace Insurance card.

I'm surprised that the council are actually your employers. To do the job in Ipswich you have to apply to an agency in the Republic of Ireland!
If you've got any paperwork relating to your state pension, your NI number should be on there. It might not actually say 'National Insurance Number'. It could be given as something like 'DWP Reference No.". If you can find something that's made up of two letters, six digits and one letter (For example, "AB123456C" or "AB 12 34 56 C"), that will be what you're looking for.

Just in cas anyone is interested I have sorted the problem out Been to the Jobcentre and got a letter from them with my insurance number on. I went to the Registery Office and bought (7) a copy of my first marriage so their was a continuity of name change and they have accepted these as prove I am not an alien :)
