I have been offered a final settlement compensation of £1000 for an incident where I suffered cuts bruises and swelling to my knee after falling down an uncovered man hole. I have no idea if this is a reasonable offer or not, could anyone advise?

Are you happy with £1k? If you are its enough. I take it you have no long term injuries.

There is no doubt that they, I take it its the council, were negligent, however you have to take it that they didn't intend to harm you or anyone else.

Once upon a time this was called an accident and all you would have got is a good row and a letter of apology.

As long as you have no long term damage i'd say a grand is more than enough.

P.S i'm not in any way having a go.
no need to be rude about it jackthehat, i only wanted advice!
Exploding custard-pie damage ?
Injured by a troublesome comedy fire-hose ?

Well thanks to those who gave a sensible answer. As for the rest well lets hope nothing similar happens to you.... or maybe not
That was harsh M1969, you wish ill upon me :( I think I may cry.
Seriously though, worse has happened to me. Guess what, I lived with it and moved on. No interest in claiming or sueing anybody.
You haven't really explained, M1969.

The figure you mention could be an adequate amount..............it may not !
On the contrary, it has happened to me. I slipped on some wet leaves and fell down some concrete stairs and was injured. However, I put it down to me not looking where I was going instead of the compensation culture we live in nowadays.

Interesting how you claim to dislike the compensation culture yet are only too happy to screw £1000 out of someone.

Dave the Dog, most sensible reply so far.... Initially a letter of apology would have been acceptable but was not forthcoming
Dear M1969,

We are sorry you find it tricky to walk along the street without falling into open manholes. May we suggest you have someone walk with you next time you go out.

Your sincerely
The Council.

Square bear slipping on wet leaves is completey different and i have done things like that and nere claimed. i have never claimed for anything in my life. I have paid insurance premiums for 30 years and never claimed so i have not increased any of your premiums, infact I will have reduced them by never claiming for minor home ior car insurance claims. but this was an uncovered unlit hole and caused me injury through no fault of my own. Thanks for your apology though.
Question Author
jack the hat, what else do you need to know??
How is it different? I was injured and you were injured. The only thing different is that you want to blame someone else.
Question Author
could you see the wet leaves? someone was to blame for mine as someone left a deep hole uncovered so yes I do want to blame someone...
The questions I asked, I asked for a reason.

If all you sustained were bumps and bruises and it had no other impact on you, £ 1000, is a generous amount.

If you lost wages, had transportation costs, will suffer for years to come, etc. it ,may not be.

Which, after all, was your original question...........
No I couldn't see teh leaves as it was dark.
Could you see the open manhole?

If you are looking for someone to blame I suggest you look in the mirror.
Question Author
Jackthehat, sorry I thought I had answered but can see that I didnt (have been spending more time getting side tracked by the few saintly idiots on here instead)

It was just cuts bruising & swelling and no perminant damage. was off work for a few days but thats all.
Why do you believe your injury to be worth £1000?
Question Author
square bear, very convenient...
I would be more than content with the award, in that case.
What was convenient?
