Getting a car home....Insurance

Hi Hope someone can help asap, I have found a lovely little car for my daughter, she has got no insurance at the moment, I am fully comp on my car does that cover me to drive to get it home its around 45 miles away from me.

You should check your policy - you may have cover for driving other vehicles with the owners consent but this is usually only third party - much safer to purchase a day policy. RAC and AVIVA do this via their websites.

Check your policy - but normally in the past your fully comp policy would cover you for driving other cars but only for Third Paty risk - ie it would not cover for any damage to the car.

All cars on the highway must be insured. Get a cover note from your insurance company if the seller cant cover the car.

It's so difficult I know it worries me as you do not know what you are going to get, The cat sadly had gone it was the best one i had seen, Daughters so desperate but I am sure one will come up that was in the same kind of condition so she will just have to waite, If any one knows of a good toyota yaris 1.0 let me know I live in buckinghamshire so roughly 45 miles radius of us would be good around £1500 we are looking through the net at the moment at the normal websites like autotraders,adtraders,exchange and mart, but can anyone tell me if i was going to buy the magazines would they have more cars in them,

You would only be covered by your insurance if the car you are driving is also insured. As echokilo says take out a day policy to get the car home. Then don't forget you shouldn't keep it on the road if it has no insurance so get it covered asap unless it goes on a driveway.

Josaphine, If you can afford pay someone to go with you if you find a car, £1500 at today's prices is not a lot for a car be live me, I am not talking about a lot of money to get someone with good Mechanical knowledge but someone that can save you ££££ If you do not get it checked & there are a hell of a lot that can go wrong, I do not intend to scare you but you have no doubt heard many stories about rip off merchants, do not bye if you see one on the side of roads with mobile Nos on, bye from a Dealer that way you will have come back on the garage, check the prices out via EBay or the likes, barter for all you can, you have the money, they have the car, they want to sell, you can walk away just remember that. twr..I will try and ask someone to come with me when we find one, the problem is that that this car is gong to be a first car the insurance is nearly the same price as the car, I am a single parent and don't really know anyone with alot of mechanical knowledge I was thinking of asking my brother inlaw if he would come with us, every car I have found and contacted them about it they either do not understand alot of english or say they are not trade but then you see another car and you can instantly tell from the surroundings of the car that its from the same seller, I dont fancy ebay much, but if i have to then we will go to a garage but I think they so bump up the price on a vehicle that we will pay well over the odds + insurance will go up.. Im fed up with thinking about it already also if we did get a dud car it will be me who is to blame.

Just ring you Insurance company and ask them to cover it short term.
They will probably add it and charge you an admin fee.

I used to own a chauffeur company and I've always bought cars from private sellers. That way I avoided dealer mark-ups and many people do look after their own cars to some degree if they have to use them. I know what I'm looking at and what condition a car is in but all second-hand cars need some attention (as do one in four new ones!). I always reckoned I would have to look at six cars before I found a good one.

Don't consider the looks of the car too much. What is far more important is the mechanical condition - whether the car has been regularly serviced and well maintained. A nice shiny car can be completely unroadworthy, while a car that doesn't look quite so good might be superbly maintained. I always bought a car knowing I would immediately give the car a full service and change many parts such as fuel lines, water hoses, bulbs, fuses etc as a matter of course.

Do you have a relative, friend or neighbour who knows about cars and could look at a car for you? If not then a reasonable dealer should give you a guarantee, although many don't or are pretty well worthless.The first car you see probably won't be the best. I hate to see women upset by being ripped off as I've seen it far too many times. I'm in Aylesbury so I would be happy to look at a car for you if it's not too far. Give me the address and I would go and see it or maybe meet you there.

I'm not sure how to get the vendor's address from you by the way as I think AB are quite hot on things like that. If you wanted me to look at a car then perhaps you could suggest something secure.

Thank you andyvon I have loads of your posts...I am more a reader than a writer in replying as everything i want to write comes out completely wrong, If I was to ask you to come with me, I would pay you for your time, It's very nice of you, My brother in law does not really know alot about cars but a male with you does not let you look so vunerable, so thankyou

gina 32 My daughter is not 17 till the 5th of april so will not have a provisional license till then
