Went to see my doctor in May this year as I have developed a tremor in my hands (left hand worse than right). She referred me to a neurologist and I went to see him on 2nd August. He said I needed further tests as he's not sure what's causing it. I had a letter on Friday from EMG dept and I have made an appointment for a nerve conduction test on Monday next week. He also wants me to have an MRI and I had a phone call on Saturday and I am booked in for that on Thursday next week. First of all I'm surprised to get the tests done so quickly but I'm nervous as to what happens, more the nerve conduction thing than the MRI which he says I can have under sedation as I suffer with claustrophobia. Has anyone had these test and are they like?

I had no problem with NCS, although some folk find it a bit uncomfortable.
You do feel a slight tapping as the current is passed through your nerves.
The neurophysiologist explained it all to me while she was doing it.
Many folk find MRI scans claustrophobic. I was fine. The machine is a bit noisy. I was given a button to press if I was uncomfortable, so they can stop it instantly. They speak to you through headphones to make sure you are all right. I had no problem with the test although I can understand why some folk find it claustrophobic.

kathyan I had to have an MRI a few years ago after having a fit at work. I am terribly claustrophobic and told them that. They gave me a sedative, Diazepam I think, it didn't knock me out just made me feel sleepy and relaxed like the feeling you get just before you fall asleep. So I suggest you tell them your concerns so they can give you something.
Kathyan, I had both my tests in Dundee, and the staff were very reassuring and helpful. There really is nothing to worry about. They even offered me a choice of music to listen to through headphones, during the MRI! But me being an old square, I declined the music, and let them get on with it.
