For the last few years I have been fretting a bit about my odd sleep pattern. It seems I sleep for between 40mins and 2 hours. I did worry about that quite a bit, thinking something was wrong.
Today I was directed to a youtube channel by 'thoughty2' in which he explains that 'biphasic sleep' was once the norm, and that some people revert to it in later years.
At last I can stop  worrying about being strange or wondering why/what is making me wake.

I should have added that after a few hours of being active - I do actually get back to sleep for another handful of hours.

My sleep pattern is similar to yours.  Last night I was exhausted and fell asleep mid-Sudoku at half past eight and woke up at just after eleven feeling bright and fully awake.

Usually, I sleep for about ninety minutes, am fully awake for a few hours, and then go back to sleep at about six in the morning.

'Thoughty2' videos are good and well-researched.

My sleep pattern is the same. I wake up, try to get back to sleep, if I can't I read for thirty minutes. If I'm still awake I get up and potter, have a shower and go back to bed 

I used to take the dog for a walk around the park or the river.  I got stopped by the police once to check that I was okay and why I was out at 3am.  I had a Lab/GSD on a lead, they still asked.

Isn't it comforting to know you are not alone in this.

Earlier this year or last, there was an article in the Times magazine about this type of sleeping.  I did it, by chance, a couple of nights ago. Felt dreadful the next day.

I read about bi-phasic sleep a few years ago. It was common up until the industrial revolution. People slept and woke with the sun. The middle of the night awake phase was spent chatting and socialising, doing some chores, having sex.

when I had norovirus- the reg commented ' no one has ever died from lack of sleep'

and then went onto say that everyone seems to sleep between 5-7am. and this was enough

and yes if I am wide awake 2-4 am I feel pretty drugged at 8 am
