My contract states that I need to work a 3 month notice period.. I am looking for a new job and a lot of recruitment agencies and companies want a 1-2 month notice.. how can I get out of this without resigning.. or is that my only option?

You could hand your notice in now. That would then give you 1-2 months to find a new job
I wouldn't think resigning and hoping you get another job in this financial climate would be a good idea - why don't you ask your employer if they would be happy to let you go after a month? You don't know if you don't ask. It worked for me in a previous job.
