I started work for a company through an agency on the 6th of dec, the first week was mostly training, in a classroom for 2 days then on the job for the next two days.
i drove over 300 miles in that week to attend the courses and now i am hearing that i will not be payed at all for that training week. is this legal? and is there much i can do about it if they dont pay me?

thanks deb

at the interview we were told we would get 50 pound a day whilst training. i am working for the company i guess , as i have there uniform and all kit with there trademarks and logos.
Ok do you have a contract stating your start date is the 6th dec?
Was the training related to the agency or to the company you are now working for?
Ta
Question Author
no , i have no paper work what so ever.
Where have you heard you won't get paid? From someone official at the company?
did you sign a contract with the agency - are you working for them as a temp with this other compnay or have you been employed directly by the other company, through the agency?

the training was for the company im working for, use of a handheld device and health and safety etc. i have an email stating i start the 6th of dec.
yes but WHO are you working for the agency or the company
Well based on that and what you were told at interview you should get at least the £50 a day for training. You may not (probably won't) get travelling costs paid.
I would ask at work- it may be a misunderstanding

i have not signed anything, no contracts, the man at the interview said after a 3month trial the company would decide to take us on as their own employee's. another chap that was at the same interview said that this is what he was told about no pay for training, we have kept in touch as its a work from home type of job.
Ask your agency to clarify things as it seems you are employed by them.

sorry for my thickness i have never worked for or through an agancy before so i don't know which one it is i'm doing....... if ya know what i mean. i just would like to know my fights before i goin with all guns blazing .
We still haven't got to the bottom of who is paying your salary - is it the agency? If they have placed you with this company then the company pay the agency (usually) and the agency pay you. (That's what happened to me when I worked through an agency). You therefore need to go back to the agency and find out what they think they are paying you for that training week. Don't listen to rumour, get the facts from the person who is paying your wages. You must have signed a contract with the agency.
So, you went and registered with an agency.
They then provide you with the details of a company needing staff.
1. Did you contact the company directly to arrange the training, or, were you informed, by the agency that you had to attend the training course ?
2. Who held the interview ? The agency, or the company ?
3. Who told you about the £ 50 per day ? The company or the agency ?
Ignore for now what your colleague says. Ask the agency and politely remind them what you were told at interview. No need yet to go in with all guns blazing

ahh, im supposed to be being paid by the agency (weekly) as yet i have recieved nothing.
Then it is the agency you ought to be contacting.
You don't have to be combative. A query as to whether you can expect any monies before Christmas is not unreasonable...........and ask about the training monies at the same time.
Right, we are getting somewhere! Usually they pay you a week in arrears - so I do suggest, give them a ring, ask them when you are going to be paid since you started work on 6th December, so you will be due at least some money for December. When they tell you, clarify with them whether you are in fact being paid for that training week at the rate you were told. It would not be unusual for a new recruit to be unclear about some details, so they won't mind you asking. Do it now - set your mind at rest.
